Westfield was first settled by Europeans in The population was 40, at the census. The area was originally inhabited by the Pocomtuc , and was called Woronoco meaning "the winding land" [5]. Trading houses were built in to by European settlers from the Connecticut Colony. Massachusetts asserted jurisdiction, and prevailed after a boundary survey.
