Nicolas Jackson headed Chelsea into the lead after 35 minutes, and they were good value for their half-time advantage. But Brentford came out flying after the break, equalising through Mads Roerslev and then ahead when Yoane Wissa struck a stunning acrobatic bicycle kick. Looked assured at the back on his first Premier League start of the season. Looks set for a fair bit of game time for the rest of the season, providing he stays fit. At fault for defensive lapses though.

Gusto, as always, looked solid. Perhaps he did not get to show off his attacking abilities as much as he would have wanted to on the night.

The Blues broke the deadlock and tied the score on aggregate on 15 minutes. Chilwell's adventurous run infield saw him skip past a couple of Middlesbrough defenders and slip in Raheem Sterling. The winger then squared for Armando Broja to tap home, though the Albanian's first touch was poor and the retreating Jonny Howson appeared to get a telling touch as the ball trickled into an empty net.

Liverpool took the lead through Luis Diaz early in the game before the defender's debut goal made it - a scoreline that would remain the same despite the best efforts of both sides. It was a thoroughly entertaining end-to-end start to the game, with Enzo Fernandez seeing a shot from just outside the six-yard box brilliantly blocked by Ibrahima Konate before the Reds stormed up the other end seconds later and hit the crossbar. Mohamed Salah gathered possession on the edge of the box and curled the ball over Robert Sanchez and onto the upright. A few minutes later new Chelsea signing Nicolas Jackson came within a whisker of opening the scoring.
