Challenger brand electric panels are not a concern. Our client went to sell their home this year, and the next home inspector who came in behind us called the panel a fire hazard and said it should be replaced. So the seller, our previous client, hired an electrician to replace the panel. But the circuit breaker panel was fine! We called up the electrician to ask them why they thought this panel should have been replaced. End of story. Ford made the Pinto; does that mean we should be worried about all Ford products? If any panel overheats, it can lead to problems. As a result, you have a house supported by a load center on the brink of its extinction. Breaker boxes being outdated need an immediate replacement. Get out of here. I have no idea what this even means. Please check out the small collage of scorched electric panels below.
Great job BTW.
The company at some point could have re-labeled the Zinsco product to pass it off as Challenger. Challenger panels are easily identified by the label on the latch on the outside of the panel door. Likewise, if it is still there, the chart on the inside of the door see picture shows the label. Challenger panels posed safety hazards very similar to that of Zinsco. The biggest concern for Challengers were their issue with overheating. Stab-lok panels have had much more extensive testing than these. But either way, for peace of mind, Challenger panels should be replaced.
Challenger circuit breakers and service panels were popular during the s and s. Thousands of these Challenger electrical systems were installed in homes built during this period. Unfortunately, experience showed that certain Challenger circuit breakers overheated during normal use. If you have Challenger components in your home, it is critical to replace those breakers. Replacement breakers for Challenger products are available.

I am getting mixed opinions on the Challenger electrical panels. Some say that all Challenger electrical panels are bad and should be replaced no matter what, others say just the older versions of the Challenger panels. Like with any electrical panel I will examine it for obvious defects and include it into my report. The other day I inspected a home with no ledger, but some of the breakers were Challenger. Is this electrical panel photo included a concern or is all Challenger panels a concern.

Stop it. Challenger panels dangerous? Eaton BR breakers are listed as a replacement for the Challenger breakers. It is also my understanding from several licensed electricians in this area that replacing those single pole breakers with a new version of the Eaton or similar single pole breaker is the fix for that panel. Over the years it was discovered that two types of circuit breakers manufactured by Challenger were overheating under NORMAL conditions at the connection point to the bus bar. Note that the common trip mechanism that sometimes jams in the brand X type multi-pole breakers did not exist when Brand 1 X breakers were manufactured. Other than the sticker on the panel, many Zinsco, Sylvania, and Zinsco-Sylvania panels are indistinguishable. Fortunately the Challenger products in question are no longer manufactured.
