The spawn bonded to Cletus through a wound in his hand, merging with his blood and becoming red-and-black in color. When it was eventually separated from him, [31] Norman Osborn also known as the super villain Green Goblin took possession of the symbiote and became the Red Goblin. During his assault on his own family, he bonded an offshoot of the symbiote to his own grandson, Normie , turning him into the Goblin Childe. Spider-Man defeated Norman by tricking him into separating from the Carnage symbiote before immolating it. Traces of the symbiote remained inside Cletus' body and rejuvenated in an attempt to save him from atmospheric re-entry, but perished in the process; [32] [8] leaving the Goblin Childe's symbiote as the only known remaining offshoot.

Cletus Kasady is a deranged and sociopathic serial killer and mass murderer who has bonded with an alien symbiote to become the notorious super-villain Carnage. Cletus perished while separated from his symbiote, but a cult worshiping the symbiote god Knull bonded him to a new symbiote linked to the dark god, reanimating him. The undead Carnage's plan to free Knull from his interstellar prison was opposed by Venom, who killed Cletus but freed Knull in the process. It featured Spider-Man, Venom , and a host of other superheroes teaming up to face Venom's murderous offspring Carnage and his team of supervillains. Since the alien symbiote to which he was bonded was destroyed during his capture, [1] Cletus Kasady is presumed powerless and jailed at Ravencroft Asylum. However, the symbiote mutated his blood before its destruction, enabling Kasady to generate a copy of the symbiote and break out. During his escape, Kasady—again calling himself Carnage —frees fellow inmate Shriek.
