British geological survey
We are a british geological survey independent research organisation providing objective, expert geoscientific data, information and knowledge. A special webinar focusing on our our geomagnetism research, including how we measure the magnetic field, everyday applications and mitigating the threats of space weather.
The British Geological Survey BGS is a partly publicly funded body which aims to advance geoscientific knowledge of the United Kingdom landmass and its continental shelf by means of systematic surveying, monitoring and research. Its other centres are located in Edinburgh , Wallingford , Cardiff and London. This was the world's first national geological survey. It remained a branch of the Ordnance Survey for many years. From the s, the survey in Scotland operated under the identity of the Geological Survey of Scotland. The BGS advises the British government on all aspects of geoscience, as well as providing impartial advice on geological matters to the public, academics and industry. BGS is a component body of UK Research and Innovation which "works in partnership with universities, research organisations, businesses, charities, and government to create the best possible environment for research and innovation to flourish".

The British Geological Survey BGS was founded in with the original purpose of underpinning the economic growth of the nation and this continues to be our core role. As a world-leading research-intensive survey and trusted impartial advisor to government on geoscience, we deliver innovation and impact that underpins UK economic development. The BGS focuses on public-good science and research to understand earth and environmental processes. With a number of centres spread across the United Kingdom, we provide geoscientific data, information and knowledge that directly benefits England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, as well as UK society as a whole. We also have a strong international focus, working with other nations to help them to use natural resources responsibly, manage environmental changes and improve resilience to environmental hazards. The BGS is an institution that sits in an applied science space between fundamental research, innovation and commercialisation. Our development of major infrastructure includes UK GeoEnergy Observatories which will provide scientific energy-related test beds in two geologically different locations in the UK. Each site will comprise a network of deep and shallow boreholes, enabling geoscientists to undertake long-term observation of the subsurface for the first time and in unprecedented detail. With increasing pressures on all aspects of society, including infrastructure, the environment and natural resources, our expert services and impartial advice have never been more essential. The latest edition of this annual publication from BGS is now available to download. This volume contains mineral production statistics for the five-year period from to for more than 70 mineral commodities, by country worldwide. Additional tables containing European production of aggregates and cement are included as an appendix. It is the latest publication from the world mineral statistics dataset, which began in The information contained in the dataset and associated publications is compiled from a wide range of sources:. The database compilers aim for integrity and accuracy in the data and, for quality control purposes, participate in international specialist groups and maintain close links with other mineral statistics providers in Europe and North America. The data provides essential mineral intelligence for:.
