Few aspects of Link's latest sprawling adventure exemplify this as well as the sheer number of shrines - miniature dungeons focused solely on puzzle solving. Introduced at the start of the game as a means to unlock Runes - special abilities Link can use to manipulate objects to solve puzzles - they later reward Link with Spirit Orbs, which can be traded in for permanent Stamina and Heart Container upgrades. While considered optional, visiting them will make your quest go much smoother, and are home to some of the best challenges in the game - so be sure to take the time to visit as many as you can. Each puzzle shrine contains at least one Treasure Chest and Spirit Orb. Use our shrine map for BOTW to locate them all. BOTW Shrines contain a variety of challenges. Some are small dungeons which feature a central puzzle theme. Others contain monsters which test Link's combat skills and range from relatively easy to fairly difficult. There are also "free" shrines. Those include the shrines in the Lost Woods and the three labyrinths and some Shrine Quests.

In effect, shrines are miniature dungeons filled with puzzles. They dot the Hylian landscape, waiting for you to enter and conquer. Every dungeon has a theme and is comprised of a puzzle or a series of puzzles based on that theme. Inside, your job is to get from the entrance to the man at the end who will grant you an award, using the methods that the theme hints at. There are also occasionally enemies in spirit shrines, though none we've encountered were terribly difficult. You can turn those in for additional heart containers or stamina upgrades. There are other benefits shrine, too: treasure chests. In the shrines surrounding the Great Plateau, you'll tend to find some excellent and powerful weapons that will help you in the early game. There are more than shrines in Breath of the Wild , it the sheer size of the game makes them somewhat difficult to find. Beyond just wandering around and stumbling upon them, the easiest way to find shrines is to climb to high ground and survey the surrounding area.

Starting in one corner and going in some sort of continuous direction across the map, or starting in the center where link started the story, then moving out and around the map would have made this easier to navigate. This is particularly useful when it comes to collecting the Master Sword , which requires a certain number of Hearts, and so transferring your spare Stamina - even temporarily - over to your Heart gauge can come in useful.
