Passive noise-isolation headphones aim to physically block external noise from reaching your eardrums by either sealing in your ear canals like earplugs these models are often called canalphones or by enclosing your ears completely. Each of these two approaches has its advantages. Noise canceling headphones, on the other hand, tend to be more comfortable and allow you to still hear the world outside, including voices and conversations. Their drawbacks are generally inferior sound quality—much of the cost of the headphones goes into the active-noise-cancelation circuitry rather than the audio components—and less sound isolation. The technology is also limited to a certain range of frequencies—very low or high frequencies are not affected.

Maximum Usable Volume. The Bose QuietComfort2 headphones are over-ear style headphones with a band that goes across the top of the head. They're predominantly black and dark gray, with a lighter gray on the backs of the cups. The cups are padded with thick halos of foam, covered in a layer of soft, pleather-type material. On the inside of the cup is a piece of cloth over the sound elements. The outsides of the cups are light gray with silvery detailing and branding. The left cup has a divot of a cord jack on its underside; the right cup has a power switch near its top, and an LED that lights up when they are turned on. The cups themselves can tilt back and forth and rotate perpendicular to the band. With minimal force, you can actually rotate the cups a full degrees around, but we wouldn't recommend doing this. The band is mostly plastic, at least on the outside; extending the band reveals a metal core.

They look great, and the noise cancellation feature certainly make these headphones attractive for those who are phobic of sticking things in their ears. But the Bose offer better overall performance along with a comfortable, secure fit in comparably sized earbuds. In fact, we couldn't imagine the process being much easier. They're probably the better value, particularly as we're starting to see regular discounts on them. Voice-calling performance was a weak point in the original QuietComfort Earbuds and Bose has clearly made an effort to improve it with better noise reduction -- and voice pickup -- during calls. We added you to the list. And yes, that transparency mode is also improved -- it does sound more natural and lifelike. Distortion is a problem; if the sound gets clipped or otherwise distorted, you don't get the same sound the producers of the sound intended.
