Hilary Porter is the manager of Books on Beechwood, an independent bookstore based in Ottawa. The store has been around for more than 25 years and carries various genres but specializes in political and history books. Porter told The Next Chapter about what books are popular in her store. But if they want a good book, we often reach for this one. It's a family saga centred around two siblings and the ups and downs in their lives.

It was with very heavy hearts that we said goodbye this past week to our beloved friend, Di Bethune. She passed away peacefully in the early hours of Wednesday, March 13 and will be missed terribly. Di was a lifelong booklover, a passionate reader, and an irreplaceable member of our bookstore family.

Books on Beechwood is an independent, locally owned, bookstore that reflects the interests of the surrounding neighbourhoods. The selections on literary fiction, biography, and history are particularly strong. The collection of several thousand books in the store is backed by the ability to order from a suppliers list of millions of volumes. We also sell greeting cards and a few CDs by artists from the neighbourhood. We are very involved in the community. We host special events such as book signings and we have our own two book clubs which you are welcome to join. We make special arrangements for schools, libraries, book clubs and other institutions. They will help you search for what you need and will be happy to give you recommendations to suit your tastes or to help find the perfect gift.

It was a fortuitous statement long forgotten, but in Dawson jumped at the chance to become co-owner of Books on Beechwood when the New Edinburgh neighbourhood fixture threatened to close its doors.

For one thing, what better way is there to relish the beauty, mystery, and spookiness of the season than to read books with all those qualities? Our second Books on Beechwood Author Dinner of the year will not only feature another beloved Ottawa author, but will also take us to another great local restaurant! Though not every beloved character in the book has magical qualities, you may be surprised at the ones who do… and what they use said qualities for. She's also a local author — so she'll pop in every now and then to sign books for us. Can their fragile relationship survive the epic, magical battle that is to come?
