Chalamet stars in edgy, intense, ultra-gory book adaptation. The mood veers sharply from tender romance to extremely intense violence and horror and back again…. As downbeat and violent as this film is, there are still messages to be found about how marginalized people find comfort together, and the pain experienced by those who hurt others. Lee and Maren are relatable and tragic characters. They're caught in the grip of an irresistible impulse and only want to live their lives in peace. Even villains in this complicated movie have complex and understandable motivations. One of the two main characters is a young woman of color; her race is never mentioned she's played by Taylor Russell, who has a Black father and a White mother , but her youth and gender are referred to by others who think that makes her an easy target it doesn't. The other main character and most side characters are White.

What approach will the film adaptation take? My stomach was a writhing ball as I read this. Then the book started to lose me.

The book reads like a cheesy episode of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer. Maren started eating people when she was a little kid. She devoured the kind babysitter who showed her affection, and things only got worse from there.

DeAngelis does a beautiful job of tiptoeing around what seems to be the main subject. I wasn't jealous. Did I read this book because Timothee Chalamet is starring in the movie? I can't wait to see this movie. Well, one tiny bone that stuck with me, but I forgive that. At first, after being repulsed by it, I was confused. Whenever someone gets too close to her I knew this story was going downhill when the main character met her love aka ghoul interest in a suburban Walmart. DeAngelis tiene buen ojo para los detalles y los escenarios, y el mundo que ha creado es totalmente realizado y vibrante. The self journey discovery angle felt forced and listless, there was no definitive resolution as to WHY or WHERE this plot was going, and by the time Maren reached the supposed climax of the journey there were still pages left I love reading and writing about the supernatural: my second children's novel forthcoming!

A lot of the potential high points of the story did not get the time they deserved. One second Travis is chill the next he's what? The ending made little sense and in fact left me more than a little annoyed that I'd spent three days dedicated to reading this one. Not only is she denied this love as a baby, but her whole life.
