At the center of all 3D modeling tasks, there are vertices — and being able to adjust, move, and align these vertices is a critical part of 3D modeling.
Is there a way to get vertices aligned along the edge they belong to Of course the edgeloops have to remain straight too. Other programs I know have tools to do this, including sliding vertices about their edges! Select all the faces you want to line up, go into Normal widget orientation Alt-Space and to turn on widgets Ctrl-Space and hit S and which ever normal axis aligns with the direction you want to line up to having the widget helps with this twice then 0. Interesting method. I should try to use the widgets more often, I suppose. The only drawback I find is that it seems to move even the points at the end of the edges.

Just a thought - Is it possible to straighten edges relative to other edges on the same line, not necessarily to follow the x,y or z axes. Yes the Smooth function. It works in increments so you might have to hit a few times to get the desired result. Try this Create a plane - extrude the plane 6 times - select the verts along the top edge of the finished mesh and move them so the top of the mesh has a gentle curve - select these verts along the top and now apply the smooth tool a few times - you will find the line wont straighten out perfectly … In my case in the middle of the mesh I am working on it wont anyway. Not sure exactly what you need this for but … there is a good python script for this and a lot of other things. Go here. Middle of the page. Or you could manually do the math by figuring out the slope of the two straight edges and inputing the Y value from that …. Why I need it? Well, suppose you are in the middle of creating a large mesh from a background image - then in part of this mesh you find maybe that you have made the curve on some of the edge loops a little too curved OR may require that curve to be straight, this tool sorts that.

Smooth Shading The easiest way is to set an entire object as smooth or faceted by selecting a mesh object, and in Object Mode, click Smooth in the Tool Shelf. Once enabled another menu appears right next to the circle to define the falloff properties of soft selection. The default is smooth. Now select subdivide or subdivide smooth. The Smooth modifier flattens the angles between adjacent faces without changing the number of vertices. Go to Modifier Properties by clicking the tab with the wrench icon on the Properties Editor. Edge Rings In Edge select mode, holding Ctrl — Alt while selecting an edge or two vertices selects a sequence of edges that are not connected, but on opposite sides to each other continuing along a face loop.

Just slide the vertices that are selected on the 1st image to one end of the edge so they overlap the other vertices. Sounds complicated? So, aligning vertices is a great tool to have available. To start with, Selec t a row of vertices just like we did in the previous section. The drawback is that it will work for one group of vertices - it may get tedious if you have several groups of vertices to align.
