Roman Sionis , a former business executive and mafia boss who originally hated Bruce Wayne rather than Batman, wears a black wooden mask and leads the Sionis Crime Family, also known as the False Facers. Black Mask eventually became a mob boss controlling large sections of Gotham City's criminal underworld. Following the suspicious death of his multi-millionaire parents, Sionis had inherited their fortune and went on to bankrupt their company. Saved by a buyout by Bruce Wayne, Sionis came to resent and hate Wayne. Fixated on the concept of masks, Sionis carved one from his father's black coffin and sought revenge; his ensuing battle with the Dark Knight caused his mask to be burned into his skin, remaking him as the Black Mask. Sionis is now a feared gang leader and one of the most powerful mob bosses in Gotham, with a burning hatred for Batman.

Born to a wealthy Gotham City family, Roman Sionis grew up with parents that cared far more about their own social standing than about the well-being of their child. When an infant Roman was dropped on his head mere moments after birth, for instance, his mother refused to sue the doctor, unwilling to slander the Sionis name in a "common lawsuit". Thereafter, people - including Roman's parents - would note that Roman's eyes contained a "strange dullness". Roman's childhood proved to be one of pretensions as well as luxury. Countless times, his parents would don "masks" of courtesy and respect for similarly wealthy and influential guests that they privately loathed, including the Wayne family. Soon, Roman grew resentful of both the "masks" and his family's high-society "friends", not to mention his parents themselves, who would often pressure him into donning a "mask" as well. When Roman was twelve, he was taken on his first "camping trip" at the luxurious Sionis country estate. It was here that his lifelong obsession with masks would truly begin, as it was on the estate grounds that Roman was bitten by a rabid raccoon - a creature "trapped in a lifelong mask" just like he believed himself to be. The bite brought on nightmarish fevers and hallucinations, all of which the young Roman survived, though he would emerge from the ordeal an even colder and more unbalanced individual. At age twenty-one, Roman became an employee at his father's company, Janus Cosmetics. Starting at the bottom, Roman managed to work his way up to the position of vice president in a month.

Roman reveals that he is looking for a second-in-command, and thinks Red Hood is a fitting heir. His grudge still powerful, Black Mask almost killed Fox on the spot, but was convinced to spare him - for the time being - by Circe. Sionis planned to get the Bertinelli diamond to get a lot of money, but when Cassandra Cain stole the diamond, he threatened Harley Quinn and several criminals to get Cain, after several failures, Sionis took matters into his own hands and tried to kill Cain to obtain the diamond, however, he was killed by a grenade from Quinn and Cain. Roman Sionis came from the wealthy Sionis family, whose name is plastered on "about half the schools and hospitals in Gotham. Growing up, Sionis began working in his father's industry, Janus Corporation , where he hated working, until he had a fight with his father, which led to him being fired from the company, and he felt resentment towards his father, so to regain his respect, he decided to form his own criminal organization. Sionis formed his organization, where he kept several criminals protected, and opened a nightclub called Black Mask Club , where men and women could vent their sorrows. He also recruited Victor Zsasz , a psychopathic murderer, whom he saw as his best friend, and put him as his right-hand man in his crimes. In , Sionis met with Stefano Galante and his mafia, so they joined forces to try to get a diamond that had all the Bertinelli crime family 's bank keys. Sionis sent Zsasz with Galante and they massacred the entire crime family. However, Helena Bertinelli survived, and she began training her for revenge. Some time later, he traveled to various places, where he obtained several masks, and took a dark one to take the nickname "Black Mask".

Black Mask attempted to escape through the fire of his own creation, but Batman caught him, causing Sionis to fall face-first into a pile of fire below. However, the Red Hood is even able to elude the Society's members; eventually he completely dismantles Black Mask's control over the city's organized crime.
