The Sinking of the 'Bismarck', 27 May Updated, January The culmination of a famous episode during the Second World War, , when the battleship 'Bismarck' was running for shelter in the occupied French port of Brest. She and the heavy cruiser 'Prinz Eugen' had sailed from Kiel in the Baltic on 18 May , aiming to break out into the Atlantic and threaten British convoys. However, an air sighting as they refuelled near Bergen led to a massive naval and air operation to prevent this. They were next spotted in the Denmark Strait, between Iceland and Greenland, and were engaged there on 24 May by the battle-cruiser 'Hood' and the untried battleship 'Prince of Wales', so new that she still had civilian workmen on board. The former blew up with the loss of all but three men when a shell from 'Bismarck' penetrated a forward magazine: the latter was damaged. That evening an air strike from the carrier 'Victorious' - the first-ever by carrier-borne aircraft against a capital ship in mid-ocean - scored one torpedo hit amidships on her but did no damage. On the 25th the German ships separated, 'Prinz Eugen' temporarily vanishing in the Atlantic while 'Bismarck' ran for the shelter of Brest to remedy her fuel problem. Resighted by the British early on the 26th she was attacked that evening by Swordfish from the carrier 'Ark Royal' of Force H, sent up from Gibraltar. Fifteen aircraft took off at 7. Three torpedoes hit, with one jamming 'Bismarck's' rudders over and condemning her to circle at no more than seven knots. About 8.

Short of fuel, Tovey then turned for home, ordering the cruiser 'Dorsetshire' to finish her off with bismarck shipwreck. Four double dives with MIR submersibles. He described the naval engagement as one of the most "memorable, important and dramatic events" of the second world war, bismarck shipwreck.

Bismarck and her sister ship Tirpitz were the largest battleships ever built by Germany, and two of the largest built by any European power. The two ships were detected several times off Scandinavia, and British naval units were deployed to block their route. In the ensuing battle Hood was destroyed by the combined fire of Bismarck and Prinz Eugen , which then damaged Prince of Wales and forced her retreat. Bismarck suffered sufficient damage from three hits by Prince of Wales to force an end to the raiding mission.

The German death toll was more than 2, On February 14, , the foot Bismarck was launched at Hamburg. Nazi leader Adolf Hitler hoped that the state-of-the-art battleship would herald the rebirth of the German surface battle fleet. However, after the outbreak of war, Britain closely guarded ocean routes from Germany to the Atlantic Ocean, and only U-boats moved freely through the war zone. In May , the order was given for the Bismarck to break out into the Atlantic. Once in the safety of the open ocean, the battleship would be almost impossible to track down, all the while wreaking havoc on Allied convoys to Britain.

Iain Ballantyne reveals nine lesser-known facts about the ship and its sole mission…. Bismarck was nominally meant to be 35, tons to meet the stipulations of the Washington Naval Treaty [which placed limits on the size of battleships]. That treaty lapsed, allowing naval architects of the major maritime powers to add a further 5, tons, but then the Germans secretly pushed it even further. With a top speed of 29 knots, Bismarck and her sister vessel Tirpitz, launched in April , were faster than any the Royal Navy could send to war. By May , with the battle of the Atlantic in full swing, Bismarck was a latent threat. British naval forces were spread thin, tasked with protecting Atlantic convoys, fighting the Italians and Germans in the Mediterranean, and watching a belligerent Japan.

Though fuel shortages had reduced the number of ships available to the British, the battleships King George V and Rodney were still available, along with the heavy cruisers Dorsetshire and Norfolk. Commemoration Source: Copied from Richard Norton-Taylor on Wednesday May 23, , The Guardian More than war veterans yesterday commemorated the sinking of the German battleship Bismarck on May 27 in one of the most epic naval battles in modern history. Tovey could now turn his forces toward France to converge in areas through which Bismarck would have to pass. On June 8, , the wreck of Bismarck was discovered by Robert Ballard, an American oceanographer who was responsible for finding the Titanic. Harry Cuffling , 82, from the Isle of Wight, was one of the men who dragged Mr Steeg on board the cruiser, the Dorsetshire. Further aft a huge hole is visible, parallel to the aircraft catapult, on the deck. Military history enthusiasts have even found the famous Bismarck wreck location using it. He returned to Sweden with a detailed description of the ship, which was subsequently leaked to Britain by pro-British elements in the Swedish Navy. The ship struck an extinct underwater volcano, which rose some 1, m 3, ft above the surrounding abyssal plain , triggering a 2 km 1. At , a inch shell from Rodney struck Bismarck ' s forward superstructure , killing hundreds of men and severely damaging the two forward turrets. The ship suffered more serious damage from manoeuvres to evade the torpedoes: rapid shifts in speed and course loosened collision mats , which increased the flooding from the forward shell hole and eventually forced abandonment of the port number 2 boiler room. It was named after the German chancellor Otto von Bismarck, and - along with sister ship Tirpiz - was among the largest battleships ever built by the Germans.
