If you were to enter, have a coffee perhaps, or cheeky Veneziana for lunch, you might notice the posters on the wall.
Famous for his languid charm, Bill Nighy is anything but relaxed. He talks acting, anxiety — and the dreadful challenge of casual dressing. T he first time I interviewed Bill Nighy was in Sixteen years ago! He has barely changed. He is a remarkably consistent person, in taste and personality, and because of this, he seems ageless.

Known for his work in several stage, television and film productions, he has received several awards including a British Academy Film Award and a Golden Globe Award , and also has had nominations for an Academy Award , a Tony Award and a Laurence Olivier Award. He went on to portray Viktor in the Underworld film series — and Davy Jones in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series — His father managed a car garage after working in the family chimney sweeping business; [3] his mother was a psychiatric nurse of Irish descent born in Glasgow , Scotland. Nighy was brought up as a Roman Catholic and served as an altar boy ; [5] however, he gave up "being a practising Catholic" as a teenager. He has two elder siblings, Martin and Anna. He attended the John Fisher School , a Roman Catholic grammar school in Purley , where he was nicknamed "Knucks" because of his hands, [6] and was a member of the theatre group. As a child he was known by many to be insecure and shy; as a teenager he became an avid reader, particularly enjoying the works of Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. He left school at the age of 15, without qualifications, and later with a friend travelled to Paris [7] hoping and failing "to write a novel". He worked variously in a local employment office and as a messenger for The Croydon Advertiser and The Field. After working in various regional theatre productions during his early twenties in theatres such as the Cambridge Arts Theatre and Edinburgh's Traverse Theatre , a friend of Nighy's suggested that he audition for the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool. He was also a member of the travelling theatre group Van Load, which included one of Nighy's most frequent collaborators, writer and director David Hare.

Like all good beauty editors, I have been glued to the red carpet coverage of the Oscars this evening. I have been busy compiling details of all the best Oscars beauty looks out there. There was, however, one unsung beauty star on tonight's Oscars red carpet—and it might surprise you. My beauty hero of the night was, without doubt, Bill Nighy. In his red carpet interview with Sky News , he was pretty desperate to share the details of the product he was sporting in his hair. I just want someone to know," he said. In a truly surprising turn of events, in that one sentence Bill Nighy confirmed that he used the same texturising spray that I've been using in my hair for years—and I am not mad about it.
In his new film, Living, Nighy plays a civil servant who has six months to live — a part tailor-made for him by Kazuo Ishiguro. He talks about the power of nostalgia, keeping it minimal and his close brush with Instagram. S o far, Bill Nighy has been offered a seat on the tube on 10 separate occasions. But obviously I am. Always a polite decline. And I can actually remain upright for quite long periods of time. He snorts again: the signature Nighy sound, unmistakable as a chiffchaff. Am I OK with the stairs? Yeah, stairs are OK. Does Nighy look in urgent need of a sit-down?

She and my grandmother tried to measure me for a kilt when I was I was so violently opposed to wearing what I thought was a skirt, they gave up. Years later I wore a kilt — it is a deeply satisfying garment. The Parisian ideal: little or no make-up, great hair, no stockings with heels, and a Chanel suit with no handbag. The recklessness of the look appeals to me.

Like all good beauty editors, I have been glued to the red carpet coverage of the Oscars this evening. Living is a rare thing for Nighy: a fully leading role. Hare wrote the part of world-weary spy Johnny Worricker for Nighy, and has directed him in several of his plays, including Pravda and The Vertical Hour. We discuss what he wore, and Nighy goes into mad detail. Also, from work. There was, however, one unsung beauty star on tonight's Oscars red carpet—and it might surprise you. After hearing Highway 61 Revisited , Nighy was inspired to run away from home, aged 15, telling his parents he was on a French exchange. From music, obviously.
