Since you tend to travel around a lot, makes you wonder where the best place it. I've found it very difficult to find any flatish land around with room to grow. Its all terrible terrain. Best place I found was pretty far down by the mushrooms and wrecks. Where would you recommend so that its centrally located? Thermal spires: right in the center, loads of materials, clear in daylight, fresh food on the island nearby, lots of points of interest. I sort of did that once but the spires are always getting in the way. I found a nice flat area in the purple vents, the only problem is that it's a bit far from the kelp forests, and there are a lot of noisy neighbors, one of which is a leviathan. Two words: World's Edge. If you want a centrally located one, Twisty Bridges is the place to build. Finding space to do it is a pain, but you can make it work. I've found that for convenience, I build several. I have on in the Glacial Basin. I have one flat area in particular in mind with enough hydrothermal to power a base easily and plenty of room for large rooms. You will have to clear out some cryptosucchus, but it's a great spot for the mid-game.
