I gave up on the CW remake partway through the second season, but I remembered liking the original, so I wanted to rewatch it before Netflix pulled it from streaming at the end of the month. Beauty and the Beast was created and showrun by Ron Koslow, and its writing staff featured novelist George R. The series had only the loosest connection to the fairy tale of the same name. Though Vincent was a soft-spoken, compassionate being with the mind of a scholar and the soul of a poet, he had a ferocious animal side that came out with lethal effect whenever Catherine was endangered. Perlman also uses a very different voice than he usually does, a soft, contemplative, highly articulate growl that probably had female viewers swooning. Jay Ryan on the CW remake attempts to do the same kind of rumbly voice, but in his case it just comes off as mushmouthed, lazy mumbling.

Catherine learns that a city's model, Ridley Foster Home, holds a dark secret: selling orphaned children to criminals, who force them to pick pockets. She saves one such orphan, Eric, and brings him to "The World Below" where he's welcomed by Father—who promises his missing sister Ellie a similar refuge—while Vincent helps Catherine find Ellie and end the child-selling racket. Upon witnessing a shooting, deaf Laura Williams Terrylene must decide if she should leave the sanctuary of "The World Below" to free an innocent man.

Beauty and the Beast is an American fantasy - drama television series that first aired on CBS from September 25, to August 4, Creator Ron Koslow's updated version of the fairy tale has a double focus: the relationship between Vincent Ron Perlman , a mythic, noble man-beast, and Catherine Linda Hamilton , a savvy Assistant District Attorney in New York City, and a secret utopian community of social outcasts living in a subterranean sanctuary. Through an empathic bond, Vincent senses Catherine's emotions, and becomes her guardian. The series follows the developing relationship between the characters and the division between New York and the hidden world beneath it. In a twist from the original tale, however, this "beast" does not transform into society's idea of beauty after gaining the love of Catherine.
