The story itself has something of a soap-opera flavour in terms of both the day-to-day detail and melodramatic twists, although, framing device diversions and the odd tedious side-story aside, it did keep me interested. Pamuk's flair, his characteristic attention to detail, and his narrative command remain intact, but they seem less adequate this time to be the values through which we value good literature and the means through which we make sense of the complex maze of thoughts and feelings.
