Bay Net Volunteer Naturalists engage the public by introducing the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and local wildlife that can be easily seen from shore with binoculars and spotting scopes such as cormorants, pelicans, guillemots, dolphins, sea otters, harbor seals and an occasional whale. These dedicated volunteers wearing blue jackets work to promote understanding and appreciation of marine sanctuary resources while fostering stewardship of the sanctuary and oceans worldwide. Bay Net volunteers are instrumental in educating about harbor seal mothers and their pups at local pupping beaches. When humans or dogs approach a mother harbor seal and her pup the mother can abandon the pup. Bay Net volunteers station themselves at critical beaches in order to educate the public about approaching sensitive wildlife too closely.
