The Batman is a masked vigilante and the hero of Gotham City. Batman is the secret identity of billionaire Bruce Wayne , the CEO of Wayne Enterprises, who, after witnessing the death of his parents, vowed to spend the rest of his life waging war on all criminals. He is also a member of the Justice League. As the Waynes' only son, Bruce was the sole heir to the family fortune as well as his father's business Wayne Industries. When Bruce was a young boy, his parents were brutally gunned down by a mugger, leaving Bruce an orphan.

The series focuses on a younger Bruce Wayne whose brief career as the Batman has barely lasted even three years. The series introduces three brand new characters, exclusive to the continuity of this cartoon alone: Gotham City police chief, Angel Rojas , detective Ellen Yin , and Bruce's high school pal, detective Ethan Bennett. All three characters dominate the supporting cast for the entire first season, but fade away into obscurity with the close of season two.
