Hi friends! I have a really exciting nutrition post to share with you all today, which I know is a topic many of you have been requesting for quite some time. A couple of weeks ago, I had an opportunity to attend a health event with AVON the iconic beauty social selling company and speak with their nutritionist, Ashley Koff, to ask her some questions I have related to nutrition. I know we all have predisposed assumptions related to nutrition from what others have told us as well as what we should be eating every day, so I made an effort to ask some of these questions to her directly. After all, why not ask a trained expert?

Reader question: My doctor told me to consider an anti-inflammatory diet, but I'm confused what that means—isn't inflammation when you have a fever and need Tylenol or something? While "anti-inflammatory diet" is actually a great nutrition approach to help your health and prevent chronic diseases, the name can be confusing since it's a bit of an oversimplification. What we are really talking about here is "chronic inappropriate inflammation", and it's something that diet and behavior choices can reduce. But what is that, exactly? Inflammation is a natural, healthy part of the body and acts as our alert that we've overdone it or injured something. It's our body's way of telling us that it's in or needs to be in repair mode—so you were right to think fever or swelling. This type of inflammation is acute, the opposite of chronic. Diet-related inflammation occurs when the body gets too much of certain nutrients—highly processed foods, non-organic fats, poor-quality animal protein, or an excess of added sugar—or not enough of others, like organic sources of omega-3s, high-quality organic, unrefined fats, spices, or organic whole-food plant protein sources. You can accessorize your diet with quality organic, grass-fed, or wild animal meats and products.

What foods can I eat to get more of these? Here are just a few American dietary changes that resulted in a reduction of omega-3 intake: The emphasis on a fat-free diet; the change in feed for animals like cows and chickens from grass to corn and soy; the huge usage of highly refined vegetable oils; trans fats partially hydrogenated oils ; the increase in eating highly refined baked goods; and a reduction in overall fish consumption due to fears of heavy metals. So where can we find a trove of omega-3s? Among my favorites are wild salmon, sablefish, sardines, organic soybeans, walnuts, chia, hemp, and flax seeds. When I begin working with a patient, I look for two things in their diet: are they consuming omega-3s from a quality source daily, and are they avoiding many of the foods or ingredients that work against omega-3s, like highly processed vegetable oils, margarine, and high-fat meats and cheeses?
