Luckily i have access to each map,but for the people who dont the center is really lagging behind in terms of the tek weapons and structures. Now with this new ascension being released the characters will be even more advanced,i know its only a few more levels but it does make a difference. The centre will add all that content, but the island will always have less metal, obsidian, and crystal, less strong Base locations and way less high level dinos to tame. My tribe was alpha on an island server, before being wiped and moving to a center server. Honestly, I'm glad we was wiped.

ARK: Survival Evolved has grown from a single small island into a rich universe with a complicated storyline. To understand the lore in all its complexity, players must venture back to The Island, the original ARK map. Scattered across the map, players can find explorer notes written by the first four survivors of The Island. These explorer notes are crucial to discovering the storylines of the original survivors, offering clues on who they were and what became of them. While all four are different, some do share similarities. For example, Walker and Rockwell are both scientists fixated on discovering the properties of all living things that dwell on The Island. In the beginning, all survivors lived in relative peace with one another, working toward a shared goal of surviving the unforgiving biomes and terrifying creatures of The Island. Admired for his intellect, Rockwell acts as a peacemaker between the tribes and agrees to meet with Nerva and try to calm him. Although Walker later leaves Mei-Yin to join Rockwell in his scientific endeavors, their trust remains strong. On the night of the battle, Mei-Yin appears with her army of beasts and defeats New Legion. Together, they approach one of the towering obelisks and activate a boss fight, managing to defeat the Megapithecus. Walker is taken as a prisoner of war.

The Island is a map included with the base game. It is the first known ARK and is the first map that follows with the storyline. The Island consists of multiple climatic and geological regions. There are five larger mountains in the north and plains in the south. Three large Obelisks form a triangle on the Island. The Island is a large landmass with several smaller islands surrounding the central island.

One of the most productive things you can do early on in ARK: Survival Evolved is familiarise yourself with your surroundings. The easiest way to orientate yourself on the island is to use the three large obelisks that loom high above the landscape. You can see two Obelisks from almost anywhere on the island; as such, if you get lost, use them to triangulate your position. Additionally, these towering sci-fi edifices make convenient rendezvous points. Unsurprisingly, the more you explore your surroundings, the greater your chances of survival. In terms of travel, the unassuming, flying Pteranodon is one of the most valuable creatures in the game - and, better still, one of the easier creatures to tame. Acquiring one should definitely be high on your to-do list. The precise coordinates of your current location can be acquired by crafting a GPS later in the game. These marking are inexact, though - and are obviously next to useless if you manage to get lost.

I think the center has many more defendable base locations overall compared to only a few of that of the island which alphas always control. Imo The Center is like a player-made map. The Center is way better but im so sick of it not getting content at the same time and not told in advance we wont be getting it. Go check a drop. The area is far bigger and had more personality.
