This first-look, first-ride on the new Arc8 Essential is one of a number of reviews from the event. The first mountain bikes to carry arc8 bikes Arc8 name; the Evolve, Essential and Enduro Extra, were all open-mold designs. The current crop of trail bikes is as capable as ever. But what happens when you take some of that geometry recipe and sprinkle it on something with even less travel? With the passing of time, a new category has emerged; Downcountry. In its most race-ready configuration, the Evolve FS pairs a mm fork with mm of rear wheel travel, while the less expensive builds get slightly more suspension travel; mm rear with a mm fork. That said, the 35mm reach stem with mm bars did make the steering feel a little twitchy and alien to me. More important than aerodynamics, Jonas tells us this feature also helps prevent the downtube from holding onto too much trail debris when the bike is ridden in very muddy conditions, helping to keep weight down. I've seen a suspension slider idea before, Yeti can't think where With the shorter mm fork, the reach is actually slightly longer than that. Will keep an eye out for the reviews.
