He has challenged the entire Animal Crossing community, whether veteran or brand-new players, to participate in this new way of playing the game. In order for this to work players must restart their islands completely without any Bells or materials.

On January 28th, I started a new island on stream called Nutmeg. My last few islands, Catopia, Moonstone, Star Hollow Lollypop and Willow, have all been heavily powered by treasure islands. I do host six treasure islands after all. With an extra switch on hand, I wanted the challenge of a no treasure island, no time travel, restrictive playthrough. This is similar to the Nuzlockes you see in the Pokemon community, for example. This playthrough already gives me the vibes I had in March , starting my first island Pangea. What makes Hard Mode hard? Restrictions are put into place that slow down your progress, and makes earning money more difficult. You may not catalog items. You can only sell materials and crafted items to the Nookings, bugs to Flick, fish to CG and weeds to Leif.

By drawing so many different types of players into the Animal Crossing world, a vibrant community was created, ranging from passive fans to more hardcore ones. It is the latter group that went on to adapt the game to their play style, leading to the development of a hard mode. More unsurprising than the inclusion of turnip selling in the hard mode rule set for Animal Crossing: New Horizons is that Amiibo scanning is forbidden, and so too is selling the Sanrio items that come from scanning Amiibo cards that have Sanrio characters on them. Obtaining new villagers is also heavily restricted as part of this challenge.

There are other self imposed rules too, like no items in battle, play on set mode, gotta nick name all the pokemon to grow attached to them, and you can only catch the first Pokemon you encounter on any given route, and msny more rules but like an Animal Crossing Nuzlock? Maybe I don't farm enough to understand the mechanics. I do enjoy watching people play it on YouTube but I'd never do it myself. It will just take longer time to develope. In addition, players must design all of their clothes and change their outfits once a week. The purpose of these villagers is to create a sense of community and allow players to build relationships with them and even become their best friends. I like the freedom to choose what I do and not play by a somewhat vaguely defined set of rules. I have a hardcore island. Flea markets are available on Sundays and will allow hard mode players to interact and trade items when they visit each other's islands. I saw this going around, its susposidly like a nuzlock for Pokemon, Those who don't know, a nuzlock for Pokemon is playing the game a more difficult way, the main challenge being if your Pokemon faints in battle its counted as and can't be used anymore. I read some of the hardmode rules and it just kind of sounds too much like homework to me. I don't think I'd ever wanna try this challenge myself but more power to those that do!

I'm not a time traveler, so I don't see how this makes things more hard. Like I said before everyone plays the game differently and there is no shame on setting your own rules. Like you spent 10 tickets getting a dreamy, and then they move out in a few in-game weeks later. So the starting villagers can theoretically stay on the island forever if you like them. A great example of this is that if a villager chooses to leave , the player must allow it. Is that upto 7 days within a single IRL day, or just 7 days at a time?
