American Horror Stories starts its third season strong with "Bestie," an episode that highlights the dangers of online communities that promote a false sense of connection, and one toxic friendship in particular that ends in tragedy. It all starts when Shelby loses her mother and struggles with bullies at school, seeking escape in an online community centered around Anna Rehxia, a horror-themed drag queen who turned her eating disorder into a badge of strength. Shelby soon meets Bestie, a girl who is housebound due to her birth defects, and an intense online friendship forms. Soon the girls are video chatting every day, and Shelby agrees to be Bestie's "avatar" by engaging in the simple pleasures of being a teenager that she fears missing out on. But Bestie's encouragement soon inspires Shelby to do increasingly violent things, and shoplifting turns into self-harm. Once Shelby makes friends with River, a boy at school who understands her feelings of isolation, she doesn't need Bestie's toxic friendship anymore. But when Bestie says "best friends forever," she really means it, and she finds a way to make Shelby hers forever by the end of Bestie , a killer opener to American Horror Stories' season 3. Emma Halleen plays Shelby Brubaker, a high school teen who's struggling to get over the death of her mother. Disconnected from her peers and alienated from her father, she doesn't feel like she has any friends, and Halleen really sells Shelby's disconsolate and neglected melancholy. Given that Bestie is one of her very first roles, Halleen has all the makings of an up-and-coming Saoirse Rohan, particularly as she vacillates between morose and spiteful under Bestie's influence. Jessica Barden is Bestie the character's true name is never revealed , a lonely girl forced to find friends online due to a birth defect that keeps her indoors. Barden does an excellent job throughout Bestie's metamorphosis, starting off shy and kind, but eventually conveying more conviction as she exerts dominance over Shelby, until her true colors as a master manipulator and even murderer are finally revealed. Barden, an English actress, made her film debut in Mrs. River, Shelby's only real friend at school, is played by Allius Barnes. Barnes does a skilled job at making the viewer question his motivations and allegiance based on how he interacts with Shelby, and leaves everyone guessing until the episode's final moments.

This being "American Horror Story," we know what to expect as we near the end of a season: lots of kill-offs, a touch of torture, and quick tie-offs of existing storylines. Neil Patrick Harris' Chester character -- the latest vignette -- is hopefully the last "new" one to walk into the big tent, as his story wraps up after a two-episode arc. It was fun while it lasted, and we got an enjoyable performance out of Harris. Chester also served the purpose of killing off Maggie seriously, how jaw-droppingly disgusting was it when he pulled the box apart and all the guts were there? Otherwise he was a distraction from the main plot I'm not even sure what the main plot is anymore , which fizzled to an almost dead stop as Dandy was relegated to That was nice this episode: Dandy being back.
