This one had the same feel as Mark of the Fool book. Not just because I enjoy getting to see some mechanics other than the standard mmorpg style from WoW or DnD, but because the characters resolved their problems by cleverly using the mechanics.

For a boy coming of age and discovering a magical self-reliance and new powers for every occasion, the future is in the cards, in this fantasy adventure. Arthur lives with his father, a fallen but proud former noble, in Border Village 49, along with the other good folks condemned to toil in service to the Baron. But Arthur has an edge: a stolen heart card that secretly fell into his possession, thanks to a dragon. Invaluable, too, to a young man of spellcasting ambitions. Mile by dusty mile, he gains new skills and learns more about his increasing capabilities. But when he meets Horatio, his sharp-tongued new best friend and a spell card collector himself, Arthur discovers the greater powers to come by building on the Legendary card hidden close to his heart. Amidst danger, rescue, and friendships with both humans and those creatures of the more leathery variety, Arthur awakens to a newfound confidence.

The same is true for AtS. Arthur is a young boy living in village 49 at the edge of the deadlands. It was on the YA side of things with the MC being 12 years old for most of it and ended up when he was I finally broke down and got the book and I am glad I did. The pacing was fine Neither slow nor breakneck and the writing was nice and simple. Dude is twelve. Great series start Great start to the series! This is what I consider the Holy Grail of gamelit. Want to read. He doesn't even teach him about the rest of his family. However, when he stumbles upon a dragon attacking a noble caravan the dragon bestows upon him a legendary card. And it's clear that he intends for the kid to go out into the world as soon as possible. Arthur is a slight wisp of a year old protagonist who is shown to be below average in ability for a great many things.

Cons A somewhat slow start in the beginning. Author 23 books 1, followers. Michael Stanley. Good but immature Not sure what the author was going for with the book. Kurt Vonnegut famously said that every character in a story should want something, even if it is only a glass of water. The leveling up by doing chores didn't help either. I don't care what it looks like, but that's the story I'm going to want to see. I've read one other deck building story and it was fine, but this world is extremally interesting and dynamic with super interesting cards and mechanics. He isn't going to be disrupting anything. Rae sprinkles the tempting hooks of card duels and dragon riders linking cards with their mounts. This has a very good seeing with a lot of growth potential.
