Marty has grown weary of his daily routine and desires to experience the wild. On Marty's tenth birthday, Alex, Melman, and Gloria attempt to cheer him up, but a still-unsatisfied Marty learns that the zoo's penguins — Skipper, Kowalski, Rico, and Private — are trying to escape to Antarctica , and promptly follows them out. Marty heads towards Grand Central Station , as he plans to catch a train to nearby Connecticut. Alex, Melman, and Gloria pursue Marty in an attempt to convince him to return, only to end up, along with the penguins and two chimpanzees named Mason and Phil, at Grand Central, where the police officers , firefighters , and animal control officers tranquilize them. Under pressure from anti-captivity activists, the zoo is forced to ship their escaped animals by sea to a wildlife preserve in Kenya. During their travels, the penguins escape their crate and commandeer the ship in the hopes of heading to Antarctica, causing the crates containing Alex, Marty, Melman, and Gloria to fall overboard.

Alex birthname Alakay is the overall main protagonist in the Madagascar franchise. He is an African lion who, for a short time, was raised in an African wildlife reserve, before being captured by poachers, and eventually ended up falling out of the poachers' truck into the ocean, and floating to New York City, where he was sent to the Central Park Zoo, becoming one of the most popular exhibits in the zoo. He is also one of the protagonists in Madagascar: A Little Wild , appears in a single special episode of The Penguins of Madagascar , and has a brief cameo in the finale of All Hail King Julien as well. As a cub, Alex was born on an African wildlife reserve and named Alakay. He was the son of the alpha lion, Zuba , and was constantly given lessons on hunting, although he displayed no interest in the activity. He would instead dance around rather than pounce on the toy his father used to train him. During one of the sessions, Alex was captured by poachers and, in an attempt to save his son, Zuba chased the vehicle, damaging its safety harness. Zuba was soon shot in the ear and briefly delayed. As the truck turned, the crate Alex was contained in fell into a river, and began floating away.
