Most of those courthouses will close between this month and the end of May as their caseloads are gradually transferred to the new courthouse. The associations representing Crowns, court staff and legal aid-funded lawyers known as duty counsel have also repeatedly voiced concerns that requiring people to travel from across the city to attend court downtown is a barrier to access to justice, and that one centralized courthouse is unnecessary. Criminal defence lawyers have said those fears are overblown. Described as the largest courthouse in Ontario and the second largest in Canada, Downey opened the new building alongside outgoing Ontario Court Chief Justice Lise Maisonneuve and other dignitaries. The building also includes an Indigenous learning centre, the first of its kind in an Ontario courthouse, which will feature interactive exhibits on injustice, truth and reconciliation, and Indigenous legal traditions.
